Couchsurfing.org is a website where world surfers meet. So basically, if you are travelling to a country, you look for residents who offer a place to stay for travelers. Also you can look for locals who are available for a coffee or drink to share. An interesting way to discover a country, with locals, by visiting their home and learning about their culture.
And in Lebanon, there are plenty of couches available, lots of welcoming residents who open their doors for foreigners…
Also, on this site, you can find local couchsurfing activities happening where you meet cool people sharing common interest. In Lebanon, one of the activities is the language exchange event where we meet and practice one language or another.
What I like about it most, is I meet people from all over the world… I talk to them in English, in their own language or teach them some words of mine… I’m always intrigued by how they decided to go on a quest and discover the world, how they faced their fear of the unknown, how they left a “comfort zone” place to a “unsure zone” one. It is only when I remember, again and again, that we have only one life to live, going in only one direction where we can’t go back, where we cannot afford to waste our time pretending to be someone else nor spend our time waiting for things to happen to us by themselves… Our future depends on how we deal and react with our present; it lies in our own hands!
What is more important, is that, with those exchanges, I always come out with the same conclusion: no matter how old we are, where we live, what gender we are, what skin color we have, where we come from, what God we believe in, we are the same, we think the same, we feel joy and sorrow the same, we laugh and cry the same, we share the same jokes (but with different names)… whether we like it or not, we are all “One”…
Dalai Lama said: “Basically we are all the same human beings with the same potential to be a good human being or a bad human being ... The important thing is to realize the positive side and try to increase that; realize the negative side and try to reduce. That's the way.”
And an Isa Upanishad text, from the Hindu religion, reads: “Who sees all beings in his own Self, and his own Self in all beings, loses all fear.”
When I exchange with the “other”, I always discover that we are nothing but the “same”…
This whisper is dedicated to my friend Rana Tayara who introduced me to Couchsurfing, and to my friends Brigitte Kouakou and Josep Aliaga whom I met during CS events… Glad I crossed your way :)
